Spinal cord injury is the most severe type of back injury that exists and can result in not only extreme physical and emotional trauma, but also a complete disruption of your life and expensive long term care. If your injury was the result of another’s negligence, then it is wise to seek legal counsel as soon as possible. Types of Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord injury may be complete, meaning there is no sensation or voluntary motor movement below the area of injury, or incomplete, meaning there is some feeling or partial movement.

Damage in an incomplete spinal cord injury may vary from a spinal cord concussion, which is a light injury that often disappears in several hours, to a spinal cord bruises, or the most serious damage – spinal cord tears and transection. Transection is a complete severing of the spinal cord. In the severe damage involved with complete spinal cord injury, the area of the body below the injury area is paralyzed. Injuries to the spinal cord may result in paralysis from the waist down, known as paraplegia, or complete paralysis from the neck down, which is called quadriplegia. Often the vertebra is referred to in order to describe the location of the spinal cord injury, such as C-5, which is the fifth vertebra in the neck, or thoracic vertebra such as T-1, T-2 and so on, or lumbar vertebra such as L-1, L-2, etc.
